About the Role

Hinge Health is a digital health company focused on providing innovative, evidence-based solutions for musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. Through a combination of personalized exercise therapy and virtual care, Hinge Health helps individuals manage and reduce chronic pain, improving their quality of life while lowering healthcare costs. The company partners with employers and health plans to offer these solutions at scale, improving overall employee health and productivity.

The AI platform team at Hinge Health is leading the way businesses leverage Artificial Intelligence. Our mission is to build cutting-edge AI platforms that empower organizations to unlock the full potential of their data. We are looking for passionate, innovative engineers to join our dynamic team and help us shape the future of AI.

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our AI Platform team. In this role, you will play a key part in designing, developing, and scaling the core infrastructure that powers our AI capabilities. You will work with a talented team of engineers and scientists to deliver high-performance, reliable, and scalable platforms that support machine learning workflows, data pipelines, and Generative-AI driven applications.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will have the opportunity to influence the architecture of our platform, mentor junior engineers, and lead initiatives that drive the evolution of our AI infrastructure. You should be passionate about building high-quality software, have a deep understanding of AI systems, and be excited to work on complex challenges at scale.

What You'll Accomplish

  • Platform Design & Development: Lead the design, development, and deployment of key components of our AI platform. Build scalable, reliable, and high-performance systems that support machine learning models, data pipelines, and other AI-driven services.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with ML scientists, product engineering, and application teams to translate AI requirements into robust platform solutions.

  • Mentorship & Leadership: Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, promoting best practices in software engineering, testing, and development.

  • Optimization: Identify bottlenecks and optimize system performance to handle large-scale AI workloads and improve the efficiency of AI model training and inference.

  • Infrastructure & Scalability: Build and maintain a highly scalable and fault-tolerant infrastructure that can support rapid growth in data volume, complexity, and usage.

  • Innovation: Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and advancements in AI, machine learning, and cloud technologies. Continuously improve the platform based on industry best practices.

We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days per week, for the full 8 hours of a typical business day. The San Francisco office has a dog-friendly workplace program.

Basic Qualifications

  • 8+ years of non-internship full time professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years working on AI platforms, machine learning systems, or data infrastructure

  • 2+ years experience in Python

  • 1+ years experience in ML frameworks and model deployment

  • 2+ years experience with cloud platforms and containerization tools

  • 2+ years experience working in distributed systems, microservices architectures, and large-scale data processing

  • 2+ years of experience in mentoring and leading junior team members, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, and contributing to project planning and decision-making

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building and maintaining end-to-end AI/ML platforms or services in a cloud environment
  • Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CloudFormation

  • Familiarity with data engineering practices and tools (e.g., Spark, Kafka, ETL pipelines)
