Software Engineering Manager - Sportsbook

Overview
As an Engineering Manager within Fanatics Betting & Gaming’s Sportsbook domain, you’ll lead a backend team responsible for processing high-volume market data, business rule application, and real-time distribution to downstream services. This is a high-visibility, high-throughput area of the platform where latency, correctness, and resilience matter deeply.
You’ll partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership across the US and UK to ensure market feeds from external providers are ingested, enriched with business rules, and reliably distributed at scale to power live customer experiences.
Responsibilities
• Lead and mentor teams to design, develop, test, document, and deploy backend services and APIs.
• Own the on-call rotation for your teams, troubleshooting and resolving production issues efficiently.
• Collaborate closely with product managers, frontend engineers, and other backend teams to ensure timely delivery of features and improvements.
• Champion code quality by conducting and participating in code reviews and ensuring best practices are followed.
• Drive architecture discussions, sprint planning, and process improvements to enhance team productivity and system reliability.
• Develop a deep understanding of the platform's systems, architecture, and evolving customer needs.
• Stay up to date with advancements in backend technologies and industry best practices, continuously improving engineering practices.
• Be open to occasional travel for team-building, collaboration, and industry events.
Required Qualifications
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2+ years in a leadership role.
• Strong experience with backend systems development, including experience with Java (Spring Framework preferred).
• Deep understanding of microservices architecture and RESTful API design.
• Proven experience with both relational and NoSQL databases, including data modeling, indexing, and caching strategies.
• Extensive experience with Agile/SCRUM methodologies and leading cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact features.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive, ownership-oriented mindset.
• Excellent communication skills, with experience leading and motivating teams to success.
• Ability to navigate and thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth setting, balancing multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience transitioning into senior engineering management from technical leadership roles.
• Passion for mentoring and developing team members to reach their full potential.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices, cloud platforms, or DevOps workflows.
• Previous experience working in scaling or startup-like environments, ideally in a complex and high-demand industry.

- The candidate will be reporting the Director of Engineering / VP of Engineering, so understanding of finance concepts of running a small or large team is essential.
- The candidate will have software engineers and analysts reporting into them. People management skills is also essential.
- Conflict resolution and understanding trade offs when prioritizing resources is a critical trait of the Engineering manager.
- The candidate will have expert skills in SQL, software engineering principles, agile and Kanban delivery mechanisms, documentation using wiki and task management tools.
- The candidate will possess fair skills in at least one programming language, software development estimation, software architecture and tools associated with that.
- Should have a minimum of 5 years experience in the relevant field as an individual contributor and a minimum of 3 years experience as a manager.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering in computer science or equivalent discipline preferred. MBA is an added plus.
- Design and development of various integration specifications using JSON, XML, EDI (X12 and EDIFACT maps). Very familiar with Supply chain domain concepts. Having worked with a retailer or wholesaler in apparel industry is a definite plus.
- Work closely with the order capture and validation teams as they build out new solutions for B2B Customer order capture and enabling a pathway to migrating applications from the current older EDI platform (Informix 4GL) to a new one (Java, ReactJS). The transition role is more from supporting on a Subject Matter Level effort providing guidance on business rules.
- Manage daily EDI and integration operations including but not limited to - monitoring order flow between B2B entities, shipment advices, invoice processing etc
- As a leader of integration projects, the manager is responsible for defining project scopes, deliverables and schedules. Allocates resources for such efforts and ensuring that any testing efforts both internal and external are well coordinated.
- Communication is key for this role. Some important activities for communication involve establishing business stakeholder meetings, frequent meetings with product managers who are responsible for various systems that interface with the order and shipment pipelines.
- Manage team members who have engineering and non engineering background.
