Overview

Fanatics Betting & Gaming (FBG) is on a mission to create the best online sportsbook in the industry. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineering Manager (Sr. SEM) to lead engineering teams focused on delivering an exceptional Bet Experience for our customers. This leader will own critical parts of our technology ecosystem, guiding teams through complex and ambiguous problems while ensuring operational excellence, consistent delivery, and long-term strategic impact. Success in this role requires building strong, collaborative relationships with Product partners to align on strategy, priorities, and customer outcomes.

The Sr. SEM plays a pivotal role in shaping the architecture, processes, and engineering culture that drive customer engagement and trust in our platform. You will be in our Online Sportsbook domain, focused on leading Bet Experience (BetX) backend engineering (Java, AWS) made up of 10 software engineers up to and including Staff. You will be responsible for critical customer journeys enabling seamless bet building, placement, settlement and cash out among other flows.

Launched in 2021, Fanatics Betting and Gaming is the online and retail sports betting subsidiary of Fanatics Holdings Inc., a global digital sports platform. The Fanatics Sportsbook is available to nearly 93% of the addressable online sports bettor market in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Operational Leadership & Ownership
    • Independently manage engineering teams that own large, customer-facing systems within the Bet Experience space.
    • Drive operational excellence by setting high standards for reliability, scalability, and performance.
    • Establish mechanisms to ensure SLAs are met, incidents are well-managed, and systems continuously improve.
    • Identify and proactively resolve risks before they impact delivery or operations.
  • Team Performance & Delivery
    • Build and maintain high-performing teams that consistently deliver impactful results.
    • Define and execute the long-term roadmap, balancing tactical delivery with strategic investment.
    • Enable teams to solve complex problems by creating structures for decision-making, risk mitigation, and accountability.
    • Ensure delivery of software that is robust, maintainable, and aligned with customer and business goals.
  • Communication, Stakeholder Management & Product Partnership
    • Communicate clearly and effectively with engineers, cross-functional partners, and senior leadership.
    • Build and nurture key relationships with Product partners, ensuring alignment on priorities, trade-offs, and shared ownership of outcomes.
    • Drive crisp technical and business discussions, aligning diverse stakeholders toward common goals.
    • Write and present clear documentation, including engineering roadmaps, vision documents, and status updates.
    • Influence strategic planning processes and represent your teams’ perspectives in long-term decision-making.
  • Navigating Complexity & Ambiguity
    • Tackle ambiguous business and technical problems with structured, data-driven approaches.
    • Provide clarity of vision, goals, and trade-offs when requirements are evolving or undefined.
    • Foster a culture of experimentation, where teams are encouraged to innovate while making smart trade-offs between short- and long-term outcomes.
    • Harmonize discordant views, build consensus, and lead the resolution of contentious issues

Must be open to occasional travel to Fanatics Betting & Gaming offices and other locations for conferences, events, meetings, and team building activities.

Qualifications

We value aptitude over experience but here are some key skills that will make you successful on this team:

  • 3–5+ years of experience managing software engineering teams, with a track record of delivery in complex domains and high performance systems.
    • Experience previously leading teams or contributing in a Java, AWS ecosystem is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to own strategic direction while diving deep into tactical execution when necessary.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at multiple levels.
  • Experience leading teams through highly complex, ambiguous, and cross-functional challenges.
  • Commitment to operational excellence, with success in building high-performing, resilient engineering teams.
  • Ability to mentor and grow engineers and future leaders, fostering a strong engineering culture.

The base salary range for this role is 180,000 - 265,000 per year, depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This role is eligible for the Fanatics Betting and Gaming annual bonus program and an equity award. *Salary range is listed in USD; ranges will change based on country of residence.
