Engineering - Technology at Coda

About the role
Coda is building its next-generation risk engineering platform, and we’re looking for a hands-on Technical Lead to design and drive a scalable, stateful, real-time fraud detection system. You’ll set the technical direction, lead engineers, and partner with Product, Data Science, and Risk to ship resilient, low-latency infrastructure that powers decisions in real time.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture end-to-end: design a modular, pluggable risk platform and the services around it.
  • Build high-performance streaming pipelines for real-time feature engineering (stateful operators, windows/watermarks, PIT correctness).
  • Lead and grow engineers: mentor, run design/code reviews, and raise the quality bar.
  • Set the vision and roadmap for stream processing within the team; make build/buy/cost trade-offs explicit.
  • Drive operational excellence: SLOs, observability, alerting, runbooks, incident response, and reliability practices.
  • Partner cross-functionally with PMs, Data Scientists, and Risk Analysts to align engineering work with risk and business outcomes.
  • Productionize ML models for real-time scoring and decisioning (features, online/offline parity, monitoring).
  • Continuously improve the platform: identify gaps, lead architectural evolution, and influence long-term strategy.
  • Represent the initiative with stakeholders across the company.

Requirements

  • Proven technical leadership: leading projects, mentoring engineers, and shaping architecture.
  • Deep expertise in stream processing and distributed systems, especially stateful real-time processing.
  • Hands-on experience with Apache Flink (preferred), Spark Structured Streaming, or Apache Beam.
  • Strong backend skills in Java/Scala/Python and solid SQL; experience with Kafka or similar event logs.
  • Experience building real-time data/feature pipelines, service integrations, and APIs used by ML and risk engines.
  • Ability to work across functions, drive alignment, and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical partners.
  • A bias for engineering excellence: clean designs, quality code, measurable outcomes.

Nice to Have

  • Mastery of Flink stateful patterns (RocksDB state backend, checkpoints/savepoints, EOS sinks, rescaling).
  • Domain experience in fraud, risk, or AML.
  • Familiarity with observability stacks (metrics, logs, traces) and CI/CD for data/streaming jobs.
  • Experience designing fault-tolerant, horizontally scalable systems in cloud environments.

What success looks like (first 6–12 months)

  • First wave of real-time features live with clear latency/SLA targets and on-call readiness.
  • Point-in-time correct online/offline features with a documented backfill/bootstrap strategy.
  • A measurable lift in fraud detection or operational efficiency, backed by dashboards and A/Bs.
  • Team operating with strong reviews, runbooks, and SLOs; fewer incidents, faster recovery.
