About the role:

Camunda is hiring a Senior Manager, QA Engineering to lead the end‑to‑end QA strategy for Camunda 8, elevating quality governance with rigorous quality gates, outcome‑driven automation, and strategic reporting that guides roadmap and release decisions; they will manage two teams (functional and reliability) comprising 12 ICs, a principal engineer, and a manager, evolve the structure for scale, mature reliability testing (performance, resilience, and chaos), and ensure comprehensive coverage across user perspectives—business users (WebApps), developers (SDKs, clients, APIs), and admins/operators in Kubernetes, cloud, and bare‑metal environments—while enabling accurate sizing and benchmarking of real‑world installations; this first‑of‑its‑kind role, reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, operates in an environment where Java, Spring Boot, Go, Helm, Grafana, Playwright, and TestRail are relevant, and drives quality outcomes internally to meet the expectations of our customers and users

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Strategic Quality Leadership

    • Owns and drives the end-to-end QA strategy for Camunda 8, ensuring alignment with product roadmap and enterprise-quality expectations.

    • Establishes robust quality governance, including quality gates and cross-team accountability, to reduce risk and improve decision-making.

    Reliability & Performance Oversight

    • Partners with principal engineering to define and mature reliability, performance, and resilience testing.

    • Ensures comprehensive coverage across all user perspectives and deployment environments, enabling accurate sizing and benchmarking.

    Automation & Operational Enablement

    • Guides automation strategy and QA processes, enabling teams to efficiently deliver high-quality outcomes.

    • Maintains visibility into testing execution and operational workflows without being directly hands-on.

    Data-Driven Insights & Reporting

    • Develops actionable quality metrics, dashboards, and reports to inform leadership decisions and roadmap planning.

    • Uses data to identify risks, drive improvements, and communicate QA outcomes across engineering and product teams.

    Organizational & Cross-Functional Leadership

    • Leads and scales QA teams, including managers, principal engineers, and ICs, evolving structure for maximum impact.

    • Influences cross-functional stakeholders (engineering, product, UX, documentation, field) to embed quality across the organization.

    • Fosters a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and systemic thinking about product quality.

What You Bring:

  • Ability and/or willingness to use our product

  • Proven Track Record in QA Leadership – Demonstrated success leading QA in engineering organizations of 100–500 people, with measurable impact on quality, process, and team performance.

  • Strategic Quality Governance – Ability to define and implement end-to-end QA strategy, establish quality gates, and drive data-informed decision-making across multiple teams and product lines.

  • Operational & Strategic Balance – Comfortable staying connected to hands-on QA execution while leading at a strategic level, ensuring governance, reporting, and reliability practices are effectively embedded.

  • Experience Leveling Up QA for Technical Products – Proven experience enhancing QA for complex, technical products, including coverage for developer and admin personas, and leading high-load, performance, and resilience testing.

  • Cross-Functional Influence – Skilled in aligning engineering, product, UX, documentation, and field teams around shared quality goals, fostering accountability and a culture of continuous improvement.

Enterprise Software / Workflow Automation Background – Prior experience with process orchestration, workflow engines, or integration-heavy enterprise products, understanding the needs of multiple user personas and high-load environments

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience with Cloud-Native & Distributed Systems – Deep understanding of Kubernetes, cloud, microservices, and related operational challenges that impact QA strategy and reliability testing.

  • Hands-On Exposure to Modern Test Automation Frameworks – Familiarity with tools like Playwright, TestRail, or CI/CD-integrated testing environments, enabling informed guidance on automation strategy.

  • Chaos Engineering or Advanced Reliability Practices – Experience designing or running chaos experiments, performance benchmarking, or resilience engineering at scale.

Driving Cultural Change in QA – Proven ability to elevate QA culture across engineering teams, instilling shared ownership, accountability, and a quality-first mindset.

What We Have to Offer:

Compensation

We offer competitive, fair, and transparent compensation. Salary ranges are location-based, with Standard and Major markets (global tech hubs) reflecting local competition.

The Annual Total Target Cash (base salary + 100% variable target, where applicable) shown below spans from the minimum in a Standard market to the maximum in a Major market. Final offers depend on skills, experience, and location, and we typically hire in the first half of the range to allow room for growth:

  • United States: $198,500.00 to $320,000.00

  • Germany: €128,200.00 to €212,100.00

  • United Kingdom: £124,600.00 to £205,000.00

  • Singapore: S$246,500.00 to S$369,800.00
